Telangana Government Proposes ‘Maha Metro’ Ring Rail to Transform Hyderabad Transport

The Telangana government has proposed the Maha Metro ring rail along Hyderabad’s Outer Ring Road to reduce traffic

The Telangana government has taken a major step to transform Hyderabad’s urban transport system by proposing a new project called ‘Maha Metro’. The plan aims to reduce traffic congestion and provide faster travel options by building a 360-degree metro ring rail along the Outer Ring Road (ORR) around Hyderabad. The announcement was made by Minister Sridhar Babu on the floor of the state Assembly.

Hyderabad’s core urban area has expanded to nearly 2,071 square kilometres, with hundreds of vehicles entering the city every day from surrounding districts. With the proposed metro ring rail along the ORR, passengers arriving through national highways will be able to park their vehicles on the city outskirts and use the metro to reach any part of Hyderabad quickly. This system is expected to ease pressure on inner-city roads and make daily travel more convenient.

According to the government, the Maha Metro project will significantly reduce traffic load on major roads. Fewer private vehicles entering the city will also help lower air pollution levels. Officials believe the project will encourage planned development in suburban areas, leading to the growth of new industries and business hubs. This expansion is expected to create large-scale employment opportunities for local youth.

One of the key advantages of the project is the absence of major land acquisition issues. Usually, metro construction faces delays due to land-related challenges. However, along the Outer Ring Road, space has already been reserved. Earlier, a 25-metre-wide corridor was earmarked in the middle of the ORR service road for a Regional Ring Rail project. This allows the Maha Metro to be built without acquiring private properties, enabling faster execution. At present, officials are accelerating the preparation of the Detailed Project Report (DPR).

Another important feature of the Maha Metro is the planned construction of metro stations at 22 ORR interchanges. In the future, this number may increase to 25. Skywalks will be built to help passengers move safely between stations and road networks. The metro line will also be connected to railway stations to ensure seamless travel for passengers arriving from other states. Each metro station will include large parking facilities, allowing commuters to safely leave their vehicles and continue their journey by metro.

The government believes that once the circular metro ring becomes operational, Hyderabad’s transport system will match global standards. The project is expected to offer a long-term solution to traffic challenges while supporting sustainable urban growth.

Short Summary:
The Telangana government has proposed the Maha Metro ring rail along Hyderabad’s Outer Ring Road to reduce traffic, cut pollution, and improve urban mobility, with work on planning and design already underway.
