Andhra Pradesh Expands PM SHRI Schools to Improve Quality Education and Student Development

Through the PM SHRI scheme, Andhra Pradesh is strengthening government schools with better infrastructure, vocational training

The Andhra Pradesh government has taken major steps to improve the quality of education and overall development of students studying in government schools across the state. With support from the Central government, the PM SHRI (Pradhan Mantri Schools for Rising India) scheme is being implemented in all districts under the supervision of the State Education Department. The focus is on strengthening infrastructure, vocational education, and health facilities in selected schools.

At the national level, Uttar Pradesh stands first in the implementation of PM SHRI schools, while Andhra Pradesh has secured second place with 935 schools selected under the scheme. For infrastructure development, the Central government provides 60 percent of the funds, while the remaining 40 percent is borne by the state government. In the current financial year, the Centre has approved ₹407.53 crore for PM SHRI school development in Andhra Pradesh. Through the Samagra Shiksha programme, development works are being carried out at a faster pace. Based on student strength, maintenance grants ranging from ₹50,000 to ₹1.50 lakh have also been released to schools.

Vocational education has become a key part of this initiative. In 794 schools across the state, students from Classes 9 to 12 are being offered vocational courses. Ten different skill-based courses are available, and laboratories have been set up in every school to help students apply what they learn in real-life situations. A total of 1,898 laboratories have been established, and the same number of instructors have been appointed. Among them, 400 trainers are certified experts recognised by the National Skill Development Corporation, ensuring quality practical training.

To improve employment prospects, the government is also arranging internships for students during Dasara and Sankranti holidays in nearby industries and organisations. Textbooks related to vocational courses are being provided free of cost. For students from Classes 6 to 8, NCERT-designed “Kaushal Bodh” books are being distributed. Special attention is being given to children with special needs by setting up autism centres in PM SHRI schools and providing required learning equipment. Personalised learning approaches are also being introduced.

Student health and hygiene are another major priority. Schools are being equipped with RO water plants for safe drinking water, modern toilets, and dedicated hand-washing points. For girls, sanitary pads are being made available along with vending machines. Classrooms are being furnished with proper desks and chairs to create a comfortable learning environment.
