The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has directed the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to release Bangladeshi fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from their squad for the upcoming IPL 2026 season. The decision, made in India this week, has sparked a major debate regarding the future of cricket ties between the two nations and Bangladesh’s participation in the upcoming T20 World Cup.
The Cause of the Controversy
The move comes after KKR purchased the left-arm pacer for ₹9.2 crore during the December 2025 auction. However, rising social and political tensions in Bangladesh led to protests within India. Groups expressed concerns over the safety of minorities in Bangladesh, prompting the BCCI to step in. To ensure the smooth conduct of the tournament and avoid potential disruptions, the board advised the franchise to let the player go.
Mustafizur Rahman: Bangladesh Cricket Board’s Reaction
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has expressed its dissatisfaction with the development. BCB President Aminul Islam Bulbul stated that the board will now seek clarity from the International Cricket Council (ICC).
“We are monitoring the situation closely. Since the T20 World Cup is an international event, we will discuss our team’s participation and safety with the ICC before making a final decision,” Bulbul said.
Political Tensions and Future Impact
Adding to the friction, former Bangladesh sports ministry advisor Asif Mahmud reportedly claimed that India is “unfit” to host international sporting events. While cricket officials have urged the public to view these as personal comments, the atmosphere remains tense. Analysts worry that this incident could push India-Bangladesh cricket relations into a state similar to the India-Pakistan standoff, where bilateral series are suspended.
Currently, India is scheduled to host several matches for the 2026 T20 World Cup, including games featuring Bangladesh at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. The BCB is reportedly considering requesting a venue change for these specific fixtures if security concerns persist.
