South Africa national cricket team secured a dramatic victory over the Afghanistan national cricket team in a rare double Super Over match at the T20 World Cup. The Group D encounter was played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad and became the first-ever double Super Over game in the tournament’s history.
The match ended in a tie, leading to a Super Over. In the first Super Over, both teams scored 17 runs each, forcing a second one. South Africa’s Tristan Stubbs played a crucial role by smashing a six off Fazalhaq Farooqi to level the scores.
In the second Super Over, South Africa’s batters Tristan Stubbs and David Miller went on the attack. The duo struck three sixes each, collecting 23 runs in six balls and setting Afghanistan a target of 24 runs.
Afghanistan’s chase got off to a poor start as Mohammad Nabi was dismissed on the second ball. However, Rahmanullah Gurbaz kept hopes alive by hitting three consecutive sixes on the third, fourth, and fifth deliveries. With the match hanging in the balance, Gurbaz was dismissed on the final ball, ending Afghanistan’s fight and sealing South Africa’s win.
With this victory, South Africa moved to the top of the Group D points table, winning both of their matches and earning four points. New Zealand currently sits in second place with four points as well.
The thrilling double Super Over clash has already been described as one of the most memorable matches in T20 World Cup history.
